Kappa Kappa Gammas National Philanthropy
Reading is Fundamental, Inc. (RIF) works to build a literate nation by helping young people discover the joy of reading.  RIF's highest priority is to serve the nation's under-served children and families through the development and delivery of literacy programs and campaigns that motivate youth to read regularly.
RIF was founded in 1966 and motivates children to read by working with them, their parents, and community members to make reading a fun and beneficial part of everyday life.  Children from birth to age 8 are the targeted youth ages where RIF makes most of their difference.  Through a national, grassroots network of community volunteers at 21,000 program sites, RIF provides 5 million children with 17 million new, free books and literary resources each year.  Parents, teachers, and children can access reading resources and motivational tools through RIF's website here!

Facts About Reading is Fundamental
  • 62% of RIF programs are in public elementary and middle schools
  • 31% of RIF programs are in community centers, libraries and Head Start centers
  • One in every 25 children's books sold in the United States in 2002 was given to a child through Reading is Fundamental
  • Ole Miss' own Fall RIF Philanthropy, Bar-B-Q for Books, split the proceeds between the national RIF foundation and local elementary schools in the community!
  • Each week, Kappas visit local schools and read to children, fostering a livelong love and quest for reading and learning together!
  • During Recruitment, Ole Miss Kappas make bookmarks that the potential new members color to give to children in the community, as well as a Kappa Kare Bear.
  • Providing children with a safe, healthy and loving environment while reading is number one at RIF and each child remains in the hearts of active and alumnae members of Kappa Kappa Gamma nationwide.
Delta Rho and RIF

Each Fall, Kappas here at Ole Miss sponsor a philanthropic event benefitting RIF called Bar-B-Q for Books.  Tickets to the Bar-B-Q plate dinner are sold and members of the community, Ole Miss students and faculty and RIF program members and their parents gather inside the Kappa house for dinner and live music.  Catered by local favorite Handy Andy's BBQ, the event is a great success and provides fun and enjoyment for all, plus a great meal!  With the Bar-B-Q for Books, all of the community can join together and support a great cause such as RIF.  Discounted plates are given to individuals that bring a children's book to the event for donation.
In the Spring, Kappa teams up with the men of Delta Kappa Epsilon to sponser their Spring Philanthropy, Powderpuff.  Sororities and Fraternities on campus enter the friendly competition and go out to have a great time and play for a good cause!  Refreshments, T-Shirts and good times are abundant as the Greek Community here at Ole miss makes a difference to help RIF.
These events are a successful, fun and easy way to get involved with our national philanthropy!  Find a Kappa and get involved in your community today to bring a child the joy of reading!
